The papers of Jørgen (Jorgen) Nordby, Luther College graduate and Lutheran pastor.

Collection contains sermons, correspondence, photographs, personal notebooks and articles.

Collection Historical Note

Jørgen (Jorgen) Nordby was born on December 9, 1852 at Ulrik, Hardanger Norway, immigrating to the United States in 1867. He attended Luther College 1867-1873 and Concordia Seminary 1873-1876. He served as pastor in Northwood, Iowa (1876-1880), Lee, Illinois (1881-1915), and assistant pastor in La Crosse, Wisconsin (1915-1917). Nordby was active in the Norwegian Synod, serving as secretary (1888-1898), vice-president (1899-1907), and president (1908-1917) of the Eastern District, as well as sectretary of the Synod (1896-1907). After the formation of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America (NLCA), he served as president of the Eastern District (1917-1926). He also served as the Norwegian Synod representative on the Union Committee (1911-1912, 1912-1917).

Nordby married Rosine (Sina) Preus, daughter of Herman Amberg and Linka Preus, in 1877. They had five children surviving to adulthood: Marie, Linka, Agnes, Paul, Herman, and Rosa. He passed away on July 29, 1926.

Biographical Note

Nordby graduated from Luther College in 1873.  He also graduated from Concordia Seminary in 1876.  He was the secretary of the Norwegian Synod from 1896 to 1898 and was the president of the Eastern District Norwegian Lutheran Church of America.

Nordby var født i Ulvik, Hardanger i 1852. Han gikk ut fra Luther College i 1873. I 1876 tok han eksamen ved Concordia Seminary. Han var sekretær av Den norske synoden fra 1896 til 1898 og var president for Norwegian Lutheran Church of Americas østlige distrikt (1917-1926).
