Series 4: Luther Academy

Acquisition Information: Donated in 1960 by Bert Henry Narveson

Historical Note: The Luther Academy was a co-educational secondary school established by the Norwegian Synod February 24, 1888 in Albert Lea, Minn. Rev. T.A. Torgerson founded with the help and support of the local Lutheran churches. It was originally known as the Albert Lea Lutheran High School. Prior to having its own building, the school taught its 109 students on the second level of a local grocery store. A cornerstone for a building was laid on September 13, 1890, and was completed in 1891. The name was changed to Luther Academy in 1892. Four tracks of study were offered: College, preparatory, academic, and commercial. Classes included Norwegian, history, mathematics, English, and religion. Despite recovering enrollment after World War I, the school ended up closing its doors in 1928.
