Stub was born in Muskego, Wisconsin on February 23, 1849. He graduated from Luther College in 1866. He taught at Luther Seminary and was the college pastor at Luther. He was also the president of the Norwegian Synod and the president of the Norwegian Lutheran Church of America. He was a strong advocate of broadening Luther’s educational scope rather than just as a theological preparatory school.

Stub ble født i Muskego, Wisconsin, 23. februar 1849. Han gikk ut fra Luther College i 1866. Han underviste på Luther Seminary og var collegeprest på Luther. Han var også president for Den norske synoden og for Norwegian Lutheran Church of America etter sammenslåinga i 1917. Han var en sterk forkjemper for å utvide Luther College til å bli mer enn bare en teologisk-forberedende skole.
