Hvistendahl was born in Holmestrand, Norway.  He immigrated in 1864 and served as a pastor in Wisconsin.

Hvistendahl ble født i Holmestrand i Norge. Han emigrerte i 1864 og tjenestegjorde som prest i Wisconsin. I 1881 reiste han tilbake til Norge og tok prestestillinger der. Han døde i Christiania i 1913.
