Title: The Morris P. Hasvold Collection, 1921-1924
Administrative/Biographical History
Morris Peter (Peter Morris) Hasvold, born, Jan. 15, 1901, Flandreau, Moody County, South Dakota, died Dec. 4, 1985, Flandreau, Moody County, South Dakota. Morris Hasvold left the Norwegian-American farming community of Flandreau, SD, to attend Luther College in 1920. During his four years at the school, he took courses (even on Saturdays!) that were both required and typical of the curriculum at Luther College: Latin, Greek, Religion, Economics, and Education. At the school, Hasvold was involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities including the yearbook staff and the Amphictyonic Literary Society, which gave students the opportunity to discuss and debate topics as well as give musical presentations. He also played tennis and golf, and skied in the winter time. Hasvold played the clarinet as well as the string bass, which he stored at the ceiling level of his dorm room with the help of pulleys. In 1921, Hasvold became quite ill with scarlet fever while at the school, so ill that a private nurse was secured by college to oversee his convalescene. As a result of the illness, he lost his hair, which never did grow back fully. Hasvold may also have been a popular student, as he was the only one in his class with a car of his own, a Ford coupe .
