Name: Schweizer, Edsel (1923-2003)
Historical Note: Born Febrauray 5, 1923 in Chester, Illinois. Graduated from Burlington High School in Burlington, Iowa, where he lettered in football, baseball, and basketball. Attended the University of Iowa, where he played football for two years, and graduated in 1946. Served in the Marines during World War II and during the Korean War. Married Helen Pearson in 1946. Graduated from University of Washington in St. Louis in 1949. Hired at Luther College in 1950, where he was a member of the pyschology faculty, served for 2 years as Dean of Students, and coached football, basketball, and track and field. Served as head football coach from 1952-1977; under his leadership, the Luther College football team won six Iowa Conference Championships and defeated Illinois Wesleyan at the 1955 Corn Bowl Championship. Served as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1966-1984. Retired in 1984. Passed away from lung cancer in 2003.
