Biographical Note for Gjerset, Knut (1865-1936) :

Gjerset was born at Romsdal, Norway on Sept. 15, 1865.  He attended Willmar Seminary, 1884-88; U. of Minn., 1889-93; Johns Hopkins Univ., 1895-96; and received a Ph.D. from Heidelberg University, Germany, 1896-93; Christiania Univ., 1909-10; Berlin Univ., Germany, 1910.

He taught history and Norwegian at Luther College from 1902-1936 (except 1909-10, 1916-17), was curator of the Luther College Museum, 1921-33?; and authored several books. Married to Helen Baumgarten in 1894.


Gjerset ble født i Romsdal. Han studerte ved Willmar Seminary og tok sin doktorgrad ved Heidelberg University i Tyskland. Han var professor i historie underviste ved Luther College fra 1902 til sin død i 1936. Han var også var direktør for Luther College Museum og skrev flere bøker, blant annet ei bok om Islands historie, History of Iceland (1922). Gjerset var en av grunnleggerne av Det norsk-amerikanske historielaget.
