Larsen was born on March 1, 1888 to Luther College president Laur. Larsen and his wife Ingeborg Astrup Larsen.  He graduated from Luther in 1908, and was the first Luther graduate to be named a Rhodes Scholar.  From 1911 to 1914, he studied at Oxford, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1928.  He taught at several colleges, remaining at the University of Chicago as professor of ancient history for 25 years.  He was also the managing editor of Classical Philology for several years.  Larsen died September 1, 1974 at the age of 86.

Larsen ble født 1. mars, 1888. Han var sønn av Luther College president Laur. Larsen. Han gikk ut fra Luther i 1908, og ble den første studenten fra Luther som ble utnevnt til Rhodes Scholar. Fra 1911 til 1914 studerte han ved Oxford, og tok Ph.D. fra Harvard i 1928. Han underviste ved flere høgskoler og universitet, blant annet ved University of Chicago der han var professor i oldtidshistorie i 25 år. Han var også redaktør av Classical Philology i flere år. Larsen døde 1. september 1974, åttiseks år gammel.
