A summary of the donation of the collection of papers of Phillip J. Reitan is titled “A Partial History of Luther College: Some of it from my memory, my responses at 25 years, retirement events, and tributes to Luther College faculty and friends over a lifetime of teaching at Luther College.” This collection includes: poems, tributes, the Roslien Woodlands Dedication program, news releases, stories, biographies, summaries of acknowledgments, an endowment for “The Phillip and Ruth Reitan Teaching and Learning in the Biological Sciences,” a citation for the “Spirit of Luther Award,” a letter to his daughter, Phillip’s retirement response, cartoons, congratulation letters, and memorials. Most are with Biology department members, as well as with other faculty members.
Collection Historical Note
As a Concordia, Moorhead graduate, Professor Phillip J. Reitan began his teaching at Wagner College before entering his 25 years of teaching at Luther College in 1962. He became the head of the Luther College Biology Department, and built the program from scratch to form it into what it is today. During his time as a faculty member at Luther College, he chaired an academic affairs committee at a faculty meeting, which helped to determine the B.S.N. program with the Methodist Hospital in Rochester in which they would send students away to study, more popularly known today as the nursing program at Mayo Clinic Health System in Rochester. His years of teaching ended at Luther College in 1993, in which he remains today as an emeritus of the college, and continues to live in Decorah with his wife.
