Abstract

A collection of meeting records from the Community Assembly, 1969-2009.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of meeting records, including minutes, reports, and memoranda, created by the Community Assembly, collected by Luther College Archives. Records exist for the date range 1969-2009.

Collection Historical Note

...Community assembly came into being in the fall of 1968. Consisting of 24 faculty members or administrators and an equal number of students, with the president of the college as permanent chairman, it was to be an experiment in government by consensus. Community assembly was defined in its constitution: "a representative body, including students, faculty, and administrative members, given the responsibility to develop and implement source rules and regulations, judicial operations, cultural and recreational activities, spiritual life, and human relations." It was also chartered to discuss and to make recommendations regarding other matters, such as curriculum, budget, admissions, financial aid, and campus planning. The assembly set up standing committees that first year with the following titles: spiritual life, lectures and fine arts, extracurricular activities, residence halls, traffic, union, human relations, and judicial.

Biographical Note

Located in the small northeast Iowa town of Decorah, Luther College is an undergraduate liberal arts institution of about 2,500 students. The college is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther offers more than 60 majors and preprofessional and certificate programs leading to the bachelor of arts degree. Its mission statement emphasizes faith, leadership, and community service. Luther College provides equal opportunity for all qualified persons in its educational programs and activities.
